Fave OS

After contemplating purchasing a mac lately I instead transformed my Windows XP PC into a fake one using Flyakite see

I now have all the beauty and look of the mac osx but I can use all of my windows programs – I am loving it actually – I have not seen anything yet convincing me that there is better software out there for macs than for all of the great software I already have for xp. Goes for Linux as well, keep trying that since it is free but always come back to XP as my main os, oh, Vista was no picnic either, and is crazy hard to fix when it goes down , so far in my research and testing almost always requires a format to repair – sucks bad – so I am still going with xp but macified. and here is a cool new “beta” antivirus program to try out if you dare. It’s FREE!!

Puppy Linux 4.0

So I have been using Windows XP almost exclusively lately – past 2 weeks or so. I thought I would give Puppy Linux 4 a go on the lastest pc that I built. Video configured fine, internet configured fine, sound was not. I ran the sound configuration and got my woof – so good. But Wait, I installed flash really easily via the puppy package manager launched SeaMonkey and did my YouTube test – I had partitioned a 2GB Flash Drive with ext3 that I was going to use to save files while using the live cd – However – as usual when I go to play a YouTube video THERE IS NO SOUND!!! What is this crap? Test FAILED!!! Now I am about to repartition my Flash Drive so I can use it in XP and I am going back to my Windows XP system where everything works and where I will have sound in YouTube.

Linux Tests

Testing various versions of Linux is a hobby of mine. I have to say without a doubt at this time that nothing compares to Ubuntu Linux. I have tried so many different distros it would make your brain spin. The only other one I am currently using is Myah OS – which is very nice but still does not compare to Ubuntu, for instance when I tried to watch Hulu in Myah my Firefox web browser shut down. No errors or anything it just disappeared when I typed in That’s crazy. There is always some little glitch or many here or there in the other distributions I have tried. I do like the idea that there are so many different ones out there to try but I still keep coming back to UBUNTU.

VMware Player

The VMware Player is a very handy free bit of software. I installed this tonight on top of a Windows Vista installation – then downloaded a virtual OS Appliance of ubuntu804 desktop Linux. Works very good on top of Vista. I am using it right now while typing this and in the background I have the add/remove programs installer running and installing software while I type this. There is no lag at this point. My machine has MSI board with AMD Athlon 64X2 4000+ with 2 GB DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Ram. I also have multiple OS installed on this PC including the same Ubuntu but itś pretty convenient to just launch it within Windows then if I need to use my Vista OS for anything I can just minimize my VMware Player.
