Rod Weston

Rod Weston from The Sons of Skip Skiffington has passed away on July 12 2008. I had been doing a lot of recording with Rod and Bryan over the past couple years and created a space on http://www.mudballrecords.com to showcase their music. We also made several videos and a DVD. Rod was a very intense, intelligent, and creative individual. I enjoyed doing projects with him and reading his email and letters. Even his letters were creative – he was into mail art as well so all of his letters were like works of art. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Rod.

Blue Screen Virus

Wow, these are getting funny. There is some virus we have been encountering recently that generates what looks like blue screen of death messages, but they are funny and use words like “panic” , if you hit the escape key you go back into windows. That’s how you know you have an infection because normally the escape key does not get you out of a blue screen of death.

Freespire

Freespire/Linspire upset me recently when I went to use click and run. I used to LOVE this service as a great way to install Linux software. Well, they ruined it. There were all these additions, many not free, just a big cluttered mess I had to wade through. Then I found something I wanted to install and I got an error that it would not work with my os. I never had issues like this before, sucks, why did they ruin it? So then I heard that Xandros was purchasing Linspire. Ok , Xandros is nice , I have used it before, it is nice and clean and works great, but now I need Freespire even less. Delete. Yep, I wiped it. Thought I would go back and try a Debian install again. I have not done one of those in a while and I heard the installation was made smoother in the latest release. I also wanted to try the install with the single cd / internet installation based iso. That seemed interesting. I did and it worked great, if you have a high speed internet connection , it is a great way to install Debian, and yes the install was much easier than what I remember from the last time I did one , and took a lot less time to complete, yea Debian, woot woot!

Virus Problems

Where is everyone getting XP Antivirus? So many people are getting infected with this thing right now – you can call it a virus or malware or extortion who knows? Some people think Microsoft is trying to get them to buy it because it has the letters XP in it. Windows XP Service Pack 3 still seems to be causing problems right now. I am only installing this on new builds that are not AMD. Linux is finally easing it’s way into the mainstream – I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing. With the Asus mini laptops really catching on , now several other companies are going to release similar products with Linux. At this moment I bounce between Vista, XP, and 3 versions of Linux : Freespire, Ubuntu, and Puppy – they all work great for me but I tend to be in XP overall more than the others with Puppy being the next. I like Puppy because I can play with it – in a technical nature – and the boot time is extraordinary. There are multiple version of xp antivirus and vista antivirus 2008 , tons of something called Vundo, wow! These are crazy and they are popping up all over – tons of infections. One guy said it came right through an email message he was reading.

Pioneer Linux

I can’t say enough good things about Pioneer Linux. If anyone out there try’s different linux distros for fun, or is just trying to find that perfect one to fit their needs, then I recommend that you check out Pioneer Linux. Here is the site address http://www.tapioneer.com/. I just use the free basic one but the paid ones look like they might be good too if you can afford to get them. No Linux distro is perfect yet and I believe gamers for the most part still need to run Windows. Other people are just brainwashed by society and think that anything beyond Windows is just too hard. But for the rest of us it works just fine and it’s free. Ubuntu seems to get all the attention and I agree it is good and solid – but Pioneer is worth a look as well. I have barely used any other os since installing it this time.

mystery search results

So I posted on WordPress the live one care post that I got no search results on from blog.com to see if it would show up in a Google search from WordPress. It did not. For some reason my HP Notebook post comes right up if you are looking for information on where that hard drive is. But, if you search for the Live One Care error 0X04601C01 in which I have a solution that trumps most of the others, you never find my post. This is truly strange.

Live One Care 0X04601C01

Today I experienced the 0X04601C01 error while trying to run a live one care safety scan. It would not start and generated that error. The suggestion at that point was to check the forums for a solution. So I tried that, ha ha. A lot of people seemed to be searching for a solution but I saw no solution, one post read see post 101 for the answer , I quickly tried finding post 101 but that seemed to also be impossible. So next I searched google – nothing there either. I had to solve it myself. This was a Windows XP Pro SP2 pc with the problem – and it was the free scanner not the paid version. I then tried a repair install of Windows XP Pro on the problematic pc then ran all my windows updates. And, what do you know , that solved the problem for me. Now I can happily run the free safety scan again with no dreaded 0X04601C01 errors. Hope this helps if anyone else has this problem.

Blogs

I found something interesting. I have 3 blogs but only one that I considered my main one , that main blog is at blog.com. WordPress was my secondary , however, after using both the first thing I noticed is that the WordPress one looks much better. Second, and this is very important, google searches for some reason do not show my posts in blog.com but wordpress usually shows up on the first page of a search. I have posted solutions for different pc related problems. When I search for a problem that I resolved on blog.com I had about 5 pages of information come back from my google search. I went through every page and my blog post was nowhere to be found even though it contained the exact answer to the search. WordPress on the other hand showed up seconds after I posted it on the very first page of the google search. I don’t know what the difference is but major props to WordPress and I believe I will do most of my posting here from now on.
